Technical Breakdown
Wuthering waves running but not launching occur when the wave energy is sufficiently strong to drive wind against the wave face, but insufficient to generate a breaking wave. In these conditions, the wave’s shape becomes distorted, with a steep, nearly vertical wave face and a relatively flat wave back. This distortion reduces the wave’s ability to break, as the steep wave face lacks the momentum necessary to overcome the wave back’s resistance.
